This stellar natural process from the pioneering women’s empowerment group, Rama Dufatanemunda, is the product of many years hard work and advocacy for women's right to own land by the women in the group. Establishing their credentials and gaining autonomy over their own land was a long, hard slog, but now that they’re up and running, we’re proud to be working with these kick-ass women and hope we can continue working together for years to come.
RAMA - The History
In Burundi, women are functionally prohibited from owning land due to antiquated laws that only allow land to be passed down to men. This combined with a lack of government intervention effectively makes it impossible for women to own any form of land. The strong women of RAMA, founded by Marie-Annonciate, decided this wasn't acceptable and have been at the forefront of change to provide women with more autonomy and opportunity.
Through years of hard work and support from the Kahawatu Foundation and Greenco, who both work to support and provide infrastructure to coffee producing communities in the region, the ground finally secured their own land and hit the ground running to produce some of the best coffee in the region.
RAMA - The Harvest
The Rama women’s association produced its first crop in 2017. Before their first crop, they spent two years preparing the land and established a model plantation with healthy trees. Alongside coffee, the member farmers also grow beans, vegetables and potatoes and keep livestock to produce organic fertiliser for the farms.
All cherries are handpicked with the utmost care and delivered to a centralised washing station where it goes through a meticulous quality assurance process. The cherries are floated in tanks to ensure only the ripest are used. They are then sorted again by hand to remove any damaged or unripe cherries. Cherries are then dried extra slowly over 3-4 weeks where they are checked several times a day for any defects or damage, covered when it rains, when the day is at it's hottest and at night to maintain consistent drying conditions.
The extreme level of care, the fertile soil and diverse growing conditions combined with passion and the knowledge of some of the leading coffee experts in the region all combines together to create a truly remarkable cup of coffee with a flavour profile unique to the region that reflects the love and heritage that goes in to each and every bean.
