At Chipp we’re always looking for projects to get behind that are near and dear to our hearts, so collaborating to create a coffee for the oldest rehearsal studio in Leeds that supports musicians all over the city was an absolute no brainer! With that in mind here is our charity coffee of 2024, the Old Chapel Signature.

Old Chapel Music CIC, currently run and managed by the incredible Katie Hayes,  was the first purpose built rehearsal studio in Leeds, first opening in 1982 as Parkside Studios in Armley. It then later moved to an old Wesleyan chapel building at Czar Street, Holbeck, becoming Old Chapel Music Studios in 1992. The studios have been the starting point for many of the most successful acts to emerge from Leeds since the early 80’s, including The Wedding Present, Sisters of Mercy, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Mission, Age of Chance, The March Violets, Cud, Embrace, Duels, I Like Trains, The Pigeon Detectives, Pulled Apart By Horses, Kaiser Chiefs– the list goes on!

Old Chapel Music CIC isn’t just home to the best of Leeds' rock, pop, punk, indie, DIY, experimental and extraordinary bands. It also provides vulnerable adults and young people from disadvantaged parts of Leeds, access to a musical education through various charities and workshops. It's a one-stop shop for rehearsal, writing, recording, repairs and advice.

Single Coil Guitar Repairs, run by the amazing Gordon White is also located in Old Chapel Music CIC. Gordon has maintained and restored guitars belonging to huge names like Chris Martin of Coldplay, Richard Hawley of Pulp fame, Peanut from the Kaiser Chiefs and guitar wizard Jon Gomm. We also have Star Cloths UK, a specialist theatrical curtain company; Swan Song project who give people living with terminal illnesses, dealing with bereavement or planning their end stages of life, the opportunity and support to write and record their songs;  The Drum Room, a private specialist drum teaching space and Old Chapel Recording Studios which have been providing top tier recordings for bands all over the country for years.

Here at Chipp there are few things we consider to be as important as good coffee, but good music and a safe space for musicians is definitely one of those things! Upon speaking to Katie at Old Chapel Music CIC, we were told that the space is not only a place people can come to practice, learn and express themselves but acts as a place that people go to feel safe, recharge and look after their mental health.

Music has been shown countless times to improve mental wellbeing, reduce stress, help with coordination and develop critical thinking and social skills. Between all of us at Chipp, we have over half a century of experience as musicians so we know first hand how important this can be for people’s development and as a coping mechanism when things start to get rough. Old Chapel Music CIC is a shining light for people just like us and we are so excited to be able to help them flourish in 2024.

Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting things to come later in the year!
